Volkswagen Diesel models are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This advanced technology helps modern diesel engines to run cleaner and more efficiently than ever before.
- If your driving mostly involves short trips the DPF may not be able to clean itself automatically and you may receive a reminder in the instrument cluster occasionally (See figure 1). It is also recommended that extended periods of engine idle are avoided.
- If you regularly drive on motorways and highways, you may never see the DPF indicator light.
- If this symbol appears in the instrument cluster, do not switch off the engine. Take immediate action by driving your vehicle for approximately 25-30 minutes. This will assist the regeneration / cleaning process of the filter. Please note that freeway or highway driving above 70km/h is recommended to optimise this process. It is also important to continue driving for at least 10 minutes after the DPF indicator symbol turns off to enable the regeneration to complete in full.
- Note: The DPF regeneration will not activate if the fuel tank is less than ¼ full. If this occurs please refuel your vehicle (to above ½ full) and complete the action described above.
